How we keep our animals
Our small herd of pigs (Berkshire mix), cows, & laying hens are all in a free-range environment with unrestricted access to the outdoors. All animals are fed a mix of grains and legumes, like pea’s and lentils, from other local farms. The pigs and cows share a large pasture. Currently they have 12 acres to roam around on. This spring we will finish fencing another 10 acres of pasture for them. During the winter months the cows and pigs also have unlimited access to hay cut from our own untreated hay field.
Because the development of the farm park is currently taking up so much of our time, we currently do not raise all our pigs from birth. We also buy young pigs to mature on our farm and mature pigs that are kept on the farm for a shorter period before they get processed. We buy pigs from other small free-range farms. We strive to keep our animals ethically and in a low stress environment.
How the sausage is made:
All our meat is processed by Quill Creek farms, an inspected processing facility. Here the live animals, the meat, and the facility is inspected. Its a bit of a drive for us, but the high standards in hygiene and quality butchering is worth it! We get a lot of sausages made, meaning our sausages are made with quality meat (not scraps), resulting in more tasty sausages! All our sausages are 'Gluten Friendly', so made with gluten free spice mixes but not in a separate facility.
Our dog treats (dried pork skin) are made here on the farm. So our dog treats are processed in a home kitchen not inspected by a government agency.
Please let us know if you have any questions about our animals or meat.
We love producing high quality food to feed our & your family!
Best Regards, Wander & Stefanie
P.s. We also deliver our meat packages to Saskatoon!
